Probing Los Angeles

View

Three weeks left, and I'm off to Los Angeles again. I'll most likely bring a camera, so I guess some pictures will show up here. Plans are a bit loose at this point, what happens happen.

If you need some entertainment, I'd suggest the latest CD from Richard Hawley. Yummy stuff for all of you with tender hearts.

Looking for something a bit rowdier? Check "The songs we taught The Detroit Cobras", a compilation that seems to exist only on various mp3 sites on the net. Legal or not, it is Rhythm & Blues at its best. If you want it, you know where to search.

Antidotes

Rudys_back_yard

It's the time of the year when the elements is at its most hostile mood. The wind does its best to knock the garage doors of their hinges, melting snow seeps in, and the heater barely holds up against the outside temperatures. That is when you need an inspiration booster, like this photo that Paul Hoffmann sent me, showing Rudy Rodriguez working on Paul's three window. It almost makes me forget the winter for a little while, this is a fantastic snapshot. Amazing car, too. It feels silly to pinpoint specific details, but I just love how that flatty looks. Restrained, businesslike.

Right now I'm installing dual circuit power brakes, with discs up front. After that I'll replace the rusty floor panels with brand new steel, and freshen up the interior. I got most parts for a drive train swap, it will go in next winter together with the new rear suspension parts I received from Chassis Engineering.

This is all I listen to right now: John Phillips - John, The Wolf King Of L.A.. They don't make albums like this anymore, and certainly not album covers like this. No matter how much you will pay for it, it will be too cheap.

While waiting for Hop Up Annual #8 to show up, I can learn to build a safer hot rod from these educational movies.

Peel Out recommends:

Cd

The first cd isn't exactly fresh from the presses, but it's still mighty sweet. Fatboy released Steelhearted back in 2004, and throws some moody rockabilly, some country and a chunk of Chris Isaak into the mix. Check their MySpace for samples.

Robert Johnson and Punchdrunks are long time favourites of mine, they elevate surf rock to a higher level. Their new cd, Traynor In Heaven For Link Wray, is a return to well-known pastures after exploring experimental territories on Taste The Whup At Oki Dog (which contained one of last year's best songs, Solna Texas). Maybe not up to par with Fried On The Altar Of Good Taste, but still far better than most Neosurf made today. This is music that goes well with welding. It may also add a few mph's to most driving situations. More MySpace.

Check Streetfighter from the new cd:

Try the older Sputnik Monroe, just because it's sooo good:

I wanna post something

Like this pic:

Gooch

I found it while browsing the archives at the H.A.M.B.  forum. Chopped  by Paul Hoffman, a.k.a. Gooch, this hot rod got the looks. Perfect, I wouldn't change a thing.

What about some goofy music? Here's one for all you zany Rat Fink lovers, and another  one straight from Weirdsville. Enjoy, have fun!

Bellander

Also, a link to where hot rod pioneer Björn Bellander tells the story of his Deuce roadster. Read.
