Lucky me

With just a few days left of the vacation, I made a trip up to my native Rättvik. The regular population of about 11.000 gets doubled during the annual Classic Car Week that starts here on saturday. Somehow I have managed to be elsewhere for the last fourteen years, and will miss most of it this year too, but there are so many cars showing up the week prior to the event that I feel I get my share of rumbling american iron anyway.

I left the Ford at home this time. My friend Micke Jendinger, a.k.a Mercury Mike, didn't want me to miss out on a major part of the CCW experience so he offered me to use his model A Tudor during my stay.

Did I hesitate? Not a chance!

This is a hot rod in its most rudimentary form, stripped from fenders, lowered to some extent and with a hopped-up banger engine. It even carries most of the original lacquer, in Henry's favorite choice of color.

Straight spoke 16-inchers with 5.50's and 7.50's front and back gives it a good rake.

Taillights are swap meet finds of unknown origin, and they look amazingly well on this car.
If anyone out there knows where they come from, please send me a note or comment this post.

The mystery is most likely solved, they are probably from a 1940 Buick Special.

The motor is a model C, bored .060 over or more. Winfield intake and carb, Scintilla magneto, a marine camshaft and unknown high-compression head gives it plenty of go-power. It sends a beautiful note through a straight pipe.

I feel fortunate to have a friend like Micke.

Irving and the Angels

Went into the darkroom today for the first time in ages to print a few polaroid negatives. DAMN how I miss that place! The amber light, the smells, the pace and the working process: it's all part of a unique experience. Yes, I too am solely using digital cameras professionally these days, but still I think they are soulless and plain boring.

When I get the urge for real photography, I resort to my books. Anders Petersen, Robert Frank, Richard Avedon, Diane Arbus, Disfarmer, Matt Mahurin, Sally Mann, Bill Burke, I could be dropping names in eternity of men and women who have inspired me.

In 1967 Irving Penn set up a studio in San Francisco to depict the people of that specific time and place, and the Hell's Angels was invited. Here's Doug:

I think I read somewhere that the bunch did their best to lively up the atmosphere, and Irving was more or less scared shitless by their attitude. Obviously, fear didn't stop him from doing his best. Gotta love this pic.
